B.Sc. (Honours) Food Technology

The Institute of Home Economics offers three years Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Food Technology. The course is undertaken by the Department of Food and Nutrition which is the largest department of the college. Food Technology is one of the important fields because it has the capability to provide processed, safe, and nutritious food. Food industry plays an important role in growth and development sector. Food technology course deals with various subjects which includes Food Chemistry, Food Safety, Food Microbiology, Food Engineering, Food Packaging, Food Quality & Sensory Evaluation and Technology of Plant and Animal Food. The course offers educational tours, seminars and industrial training. This course opens the door to a range of career paths including developing new food products, improving sensory attributes and nutritional content of foods, and finding new ways to preserve, process, package and distribute food. Students have excellent job opportunities in government and private sector, industries and in multinational companies.

The Food Technology course in Choice Based Credit System is of 3-year duration which comprises of 6 semesters, divided into Core papers, Discipline Specific Elective courses (DSE), Skill Enhancement Elective Courses (SEC) and Generic Elective (GE) Courses. Each year consists of 2 semesters. This course has been prepared keeping in view, the unique requirements of B.Sc. (Hons.) Food Technology students.

The Department was earlier offering the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (B.Tech) (FYUP) in Food Technology and group of 42 students successfully completed the course from the college in the academic year 2016-17. Students got selected for higher education in India and abroad and pursued M.Sc. International Food Business And Consumer Studies, University Of Kassel, Germany, M.Sc. Food Technology, Central Food Technology Research Institute, Mysore, M. Tech. Biomedical, Engineering, IIT (BHU), Varanasi, M. Tech. Food Safety & Quality Management, NIFTEM, Sonepat, M.B.A. (PGDM Marketing), Institute of Management & Technology, Ghaziabad, Masters in Business Administration (MBA), IITM, Janakpuri, Delhi etc.

In the academic year 2017-2018, a three year degree course in B.Sc Food Technology (Honours) was introduced. The laboratory support to the Food Technology course is also extended by the Biochemistry and Microbiology Departments of the college. The laboratories are well set up with modern equipment used for testing of food products. The college has received the DST–FIST and Star Scheme grant to upgrade the existing laboratories which give an edge to the Food Technology course. A highly motivated team of teachers who are highly qualified are associated with the teaching of this course

Programme Learning Outcomes:

The learning outcomes of the course are as follows:
  • Knowledge of various areas related to food science and technology.
  • Understanding of the food composition and its physico-chemical, nutritional, microbiological and sensory aspects.
  • Know-how of processing and preservation techniques of pulses, oilseeds, spices, fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, milk & milk products.
  • Relevance and significance of food safety, food quality, food plant sanitation, food laws and regulations, food engineering and packaging in food industry
